CDT~Lymphedema Tx

Complete Decongestive Therapy (also known as Complex Decongestive Therapy)

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the interstitium which causes chronic inflammation.  Lymphedema is a permanent, non-fatal condition requiring long term management.  Primary lymphedema is a congenital (from birth) malformation of the lymphatic system.  Secondary lymphedema can develop after surgery, chemotherapy, raditation, infection or truama to the lymphatic system. Though lymphedema can occur anywhere in the body it is most often seen in the arms or legs.  Swelling may not be noticable but it can limit range of motion and be uncomfortable.

Treatment of Lymphedema & Chronice Venous Insufficiency:

Complete (Complex) Decongestive Therapy is the best treatment for these conditions.  CDT includes manual lymphatic drainage, bandaging, compression garments, exercise, skin care and self care.  The treatment usually consists of two phases: Reductive and Maintenance.

Though treatments are tailored to specific individuals, these phases generally involve:

Phase I--Reductive CDT:

  • One hour/day 3 to 5 times a week for three to four weeks
  • Reduce the fluid build up in affect area through bandaging
  • Client education on skin care and self-bandaging

Phase II--Maintenance CDT:
  • Maintaining results from initital, intensive phase I
  • Continued client education regarding signs and symptoms of infection which are a special concern for those with lymphedema
  • Garment fitting
  • Designing follow up treatment and exercise programs

As a certified lymphedema therapist my goal is to ensure that your lymphedema is under control.  Because each person's experience with lymphedema is different, specific needs and treatment plans vary.  After the initial, intensive phase, I will continually "tweak" your maintenance phase to reflect your needs at any given time.

Have you gone through the initial phase and need somebody to help with the maintenance?

I can assist you with the maintenance phase and aid in your continued control of lymphedema.
